A Malaysian court has confirmed the guilty verdict against former Prime Minister Najib Razak for a graft conviction stemming from his involvement in a multi-billion dollar scandal at state fund 1MDB.

Najib, 73, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for taking massive sums of money from 1MDB and violating Malaysian anti-money laundering laws. In 2016, an investigative report by the Wall Street Journal said that the funds were used to finance a movie.

The former leader denied any wrongdoing, and remains a fixture of Malaysian politics. Najib quit from parliament last month as part of his effort to join a political alliance to defend the election he lost to a political alliance led by his hand-picked successor, Mahathir Mohamad.

On Friday, a High Court judge returned a guilty verdict and a sentence to Najib, despite the defendant’s plea to be tried by a special prosecutor.

The decision will be a blow to Najib’s centrist BN coalition, which has long dominated Malaysia’s political landscape. In the general election last month, his party lost power to Mahathir, a former premier who openly questioned Najib’s links to 1MDB’s funds.
