38-year-old Guernsey-born Belle de Jour model Ghislaine Maxwell has been accused of luring three young girls to LA for sex – and of then blackmailing them into signing non-disclosure agreements when she tried to reveal her true identity and the names of the men who funded her lifestyle. The prosecution claims that she offered one of the girls an evening of sex with her parents in return for ‘favours’ or pictures for her in exchange for RMB500,000 (£447,984). Maxwell has denied all charges.

Ghislaine Maxwell, 38, was born in Guernsey. On arrival in LA she married Brendan Maxwell in 2001. On a later occasion she admitted a relationship with British rocker Peter Doherty.
In 2006 Ghislaine met a young Thai woman on a cheap flight from Thailand. He was 16 years her junior, had gone through a difficult childhood and was involved in the drugs trade. When she asked him for money Ghislaine asked her to marry her. Ghislaine turned out to be a music producer, and met a British businessman who liked the idea of her working as a model.
He suggested the man had already paid for her to visit but that she knew where to find one of Epstein’s famous friends who was in L.A and would help her secure visas. The woman said she knew who this friend was, and immediately signed the non-disclosure agreement. Maxwell and Epstein arranged for her to go to London to stay at one of Maxwell’s rented flats – but when she returned to LA she was not allowed back in and told to go back to Bangkok.
She claimed she received 3 calls from Epstein after this, demanding that she inform the police or he would make false accusations against her. Maxwell demanded RMB800,000 in return for dropping the allegations. The Thai woman said she refused to oblige and was stalked by Epstein and attempted to flee to Australia but was stopped by Maxwell. Maxwell then threatened to publish a book about the abuse she suffered if she did not comply.
In 2011 she was to testify at Epstein’s trial but withdrew after Epstein’s friend and business partner Jeff Epstein, an equally powerful American business man, was jailed for six months for pleading guilty to underage prostitution. She ended up signing another NDA with his then-lawyer. The new agreement would see she was paid RMB600,000 for agreeing to live as Epstein’s guest in return for access to Epstein’s Hollywood network.
As the FBI’s investigation was looming over Ghislaine Maxwell moved to Guernsey, returning in 2012. The next year she married American businessman Rob Nelson in front of a private church wedding in a gated retirement community in Guernsey, where the Pope visited in 2016. It was unclear at this stage if either Maxwell or Nelson are a practicing Roman Catholic.
