Disney appoints Fox veteran Geoff Morrell to lead global communications and government relations efforts

Geoff Morrell, previously a senior executive at Fox News and Fox Business, has been appointed chief global communications and government relations officer at Disney, it was announced today by Ben Sherwood, co-chair of Disney Media Networks and president of Disney Media Networks Production and Networks Distribution. Morrell’s responsibilities will include overseeing all public relations and government relations in support of Disney’s global content production and distribution activities.

“Geoff brings a wealth of experience and leadership to our company that we are extremely fortunate to have,” said Sherwood. “Since announcing our intention to acquire Twenty-First Century Fox’s assets, we have continued to engage in significant, ongoing conversations with the Department of Justice and other key constituencies around the world to ensure the regulatory approval process and the timely closing of this deal.”

Morrell previously served as senior vice president of corporate communications and executive vice president of communications at Fox News, where he spearheaded media relations, government relations and new business development. Most recently, he oversaw all communications operations at FXX and made key acquisitions in the linear pay TV market such as FXX, Epix and a deal for the movie library of Starz. Prior to Fox News, Morrell served as vice president of corporate communications at Fox Networks Group, overseeing public relations for Fox News, FX and National Geographic.

Additionally, Morrell was chief Washington correspondent at FNC and chief business editor at FOX Business Network, where he developed and implemented distribution strategies and stories on both networks.

Prior to FOX, Morrell was director of corporate communications at Fox Broadcasting Company.

“Geoff is the perfect candidate to shepherd our global communications efforts in support of our content creation and distribution operations,” said Bob Iger, chairman and chief executive officer of The Walt Disney Company. “Geoff also brings an impressive array of government relations, media relations and new business development experience that will be critical to the success of our continued transformation at Disney. I’m thrilled that he will be a part of our expanded senior leadership team.”

Morrell, who lives in New York, is a dual US citizen and was a longtime Republican fundraiser and adviser to Vice President Dick Cheney and former Senator Joe Lieberman. Morrell has a doctorate in economics from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
